2022 Global WiM Awards: Africa Spotlight Series - Khangelani Dziba

The 2022 Global WiM Award shortlist has been announced and as we prepare for the Awards Ceremony which is set to take place very soon, we shine a spotlight on the amazing shortlisted women from across the continent.

For the first edition of the Africa Spotlight Series we speak to Khangelani Dziba, Divisional Head of PR & Influencer Partnerships for RAPT Creative Agency, South Africa.

WiM Africa: What does it mean to you to be shortlisted for the 2022 Global Women in Marketing Awards?

Let me start off by saying thank you so much for the recognition. It means a great deal for the work we have been doing in brand advertising to advance maligned communities particularly around issues of gender, diversity and inclusion. It is indeed a nod to say that we matter and that while the work of advocacy I am doing centres Africans at large, it has global impetus. It has inspired me to look at my advocacy through a different lens that continues to be propelled by meaning and purpose which will forever be my north-star.

WiM Africa: What do you love most about what you do?

In many ways, the work I have been doing has been about elevating the visibility and narrative centring the queer community. This was inspired by my own lived experience in the brand advertising world that I was set on challenging. The reality is that I knew I would not be able to achieve this mammoth task alone but I needed to start somewhere and use my voice in a way that would be able to challenge the status quo in the rooms I occupied. This has meant being selfless and taking the necessary risks for the betterment of others in the short, mid and long-term. Working for an organisation like RAPT Creative has allowed me to be able to pursue this agenda that has made me love what I do that much more. The ability to somehow influence and advance not only my community but brands and agencies in a space that is often cis-genderd and hetronormative in approach is remarkable. I look forward to growing and becoming a leader in this space for not only South Africa, but Africa at large.

WiM Africa: What one short piece of wisdom would you share with a young woman aspiring to do what you do?

Do not ever allow your light to be dimmed by the circumstance and environment you are in. Always fight for justice and a way to have your voice heard as it will give permission to others like yourself to shine and know that their existence matters in this world.
