The 2022 Global WiM Award shortlist has been announced and as we prepare for the Awards Ceremony which is set to take place very soon, we shine a spotlight on the amazing shortlisted women from across the continent.
For the sixth edition of the Africa Spotlight Series we speak to Angela Chandy, Executive Head of PR and Corporate Relations at Cassava Technologies, South Africa.
WiM Africa: What does it mean to you to be shortlisted for the 2022 Global Women in Marketing Awards?
I was shocked when I received the email from WIM that I had been shortlisted for the PR Communicator of the Year category. Having worked in the PR industry for almost 17 years, I have seen the unique campaigns our industry has churned out by the masters of Public Relations. My submission being shortlisted and even considered worthy of an award is the highest honour I could have ever asked for. I truly am grateful for the recognition.
WiM Africa: What do you love most about what you do?
Telling stories, bringing stories to life. Words can transport a person from their chair in the living room to the corners of the earth. While I love every element of public relations, from everyday announcements to media relations to press conferences and everything else in between. I love reading about what is happening in the tech industry and finding the golden thread to tie it to our company’s narrative. Being able to tell a difficult tech story in a simplified way that would appeal to even the most non-tech person drives me to do better and push harder. Because Tech PR is not hard, you need to apply yourself and give it time.
WiM Africa: What one short piece of wisdom would you share with a young woman aspiring to do what you do?
Ask yourself, ‘how would I eat an elephant?’ The answer is simple – ‘One bite at a time’. This question has helped me face and overcome all challenges I have faced over the years.
