WiM Africa: What gives you energy and drives you forward when you are not feeling at the top of your game?

BO: We are all human, so of course there are days when the energy wanes. Getting some external creative inspiration always revives me – looking at new campaigns and ads online is one way to get the energy going to go out and make great work!

WiM Africa: Which advertising campaign, from any brand, has been the most memorable for you and why?

BO: Most recently I have been inspired by the recent Savannah/Nando’s campaign for the new Savanna Chilled Chilli product. It’s great to see two iconic African brands working together to really drive cutthrough for both of their brands. On a more ongoing basis, I think the social media marketing from the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya is really phenomenal – it is heart-warming, creative and always get a lot of engagement!

WiM Africa: What three pieces of advice would you give to a woman marketer aspiring to a senior position about getting to and staying at the top of their profession?

BO: a: Never hesitate to speak up – you are hired for your ability and potential – use it!

b: Understand your business but never become so internally focused that you lose the external and consumer perspective that is so critical for success

c: Say YES to opportunities – a variety of marketing experiences, even in the same company, really rounds you out as a marketer. Sit on committees, partner with finance, help with recruiting new talent – keep building and practicing your leadership and business skills!

WiM Africa: Which one person, dead or alive, would you say inspires you the most and why?

BO: This week I am quite inspired by Indra Nooyi, the former CEO of PepsiCo. I just finished her recently launched booked “My Life in Full” and her personal journey and business impact made by integrating purpose into business strategy is very inspirational.

WiM Africa: If you were stuck on a desert island what three things, excluding electronics, could you not do without?

BO: a. My glasses

b. A book to read

c. Sun cream
